about

'Since I Saw You Last' felt like an important song to me when I wrote it. It's definitely not a 'lockdown song' (I tried to stay away from those), but there was so much upheaval in the world, so much was changing, usually in painful ways, when I wrote it. I couldn't not respond to all that. It's about looking out at the storm which seems to have surrounded us all for the last little while, and how the only way we'll get through it is by holding onto one another. It's hard not to be changed by all the scary stuff going on - and that's a powerful thought. The song is, fittingly, pretty massive, to try and match the energy and the sprawl of the lyrical subject matter...I really love it. I hope you do too!

lyrics

Since I saw you last
The whole world has changed
We’re all running around just trying to make sense of it
Time moves on so fast
But the pain tends to stay
We’re all gasping for air, now we’ll all get the bends from it

We’re never going back to quite how we used to be
We’ll never cover those tracks
We’re never gonna feel quite how we used to feel
But I hope that you keep running

Since I saw you last
I don’t wear the same face
There’s a couple more lines and nicks and gashes than there were before
Do I sound the same?
Has my old voice remained
Or does it betray the way I’m feeling like a pale imitation of “back in the day”

We’re never going back to quite how we used to be
We’ll never cover those tracks
We’re never gonna feel quite how we used to feel
But I hope that you keep running

Guess I’ll see you
When we all come to
And pick through the wreckage with shallow heartbeats
Did you ever
Think we’d live through
The very axis of the earth shifting beneath our feet

We’re never going back to quite how we used to be
We’ll never cover those tracks, laid out for all to see
We’re never gonna feel quite how we used to feel
But I hope that you keep running

We’re never gonna be quite who we used to be
I hope you still have dreams, those were important to me
I’m never gonna be quite who you want to see
But you know my wounds still bleed, so I hope you can forgive me
